Cantina Tollo Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Italy
This appellation is full of good-value reds but it’s remarkable to find such a smart wine so cheaply priced, and with a screw-cap to boot.
The colour is quite deep red/purple and it has smoky, toasty and roasted fruit aromas, sweet spices too, clean and bright and far from simplistic. There are layers and depths to this wine. It’s hard to believe they can deliver this much wine at the price. A full-bodied, serious red at a trivial price.
